The basic rules for spearfishing

  • Being under water, direct your attention not only to your eyes, but also to your ears. During ascent from depth, try to listen: near you on surface can float not only motorboat or personal watercraft, the buzz that you hear from afar, but also hydrocycle, which moves almost noiselessly;
  • If you hear the noise of a boat, approaching from one direction, ascent carefully: from other direction can move another boat;

«Surfacing from the depth of 7-8 m next to the rocks in the Andaman Sea I looked up as I should. I heard a motor noise, I knew that somewhere near goes a motorboat or a boat. Here its black bottom rapidly swept right over me, and I continued my ascent without looking up. The second boat, which ran after the first, could complete my underwater career at the very beginning … In the future, if I would not remember this rule, I would often hit companions, logs and kayaks with my own head»

  • Surfacing from depth, always look up;
  • Charge and discharge the underwater rifle only under water – this type of weapon has great power shot, which is difficult to estimate on land;
  • Shoot exclusively goals with good visability – shot in silt environment can injure another underwater hunter;
  • If you cannot chase elusive goal – better leave it alone: frequent and long dives can cause the loss of consciousness;

«My friend, underwater hunter who has killed hundred 70-pound catfish, saw real record exemplar one day. Fish, possibly hundredweight, did not want to go to the surface. Despite the intensity of the fight, an experienced hunter noticed a ship going into his side at the distance. Time went on, but he could not raise catfish, then smart hunter let it go, he lost his record, but went out of the ship path. Sense of caution and self-preservation has won»

Preparing for a dive

Preparing for a dive is extremely important for restoring diver`s breathing. Restoring should be smooth – exhale should be twice longer than inhale. This will lessen the amount of CO2 in the lungs and saturate blood with oxygen.

Time of breath recovery directly depends on how long you have been under water – and how long you plan to stay under water during the next dive. For example, if you stayed under water 1, 5 minutes -restore your breathing for at least 2 minutes.

Moving along bottom

To begin, you need to choose a point of relief that is optimal for organization of the hunting place. Note that this point should be also good for surfacing.

Many hunters overlook an important rule: moving along the bottom, you should not push off from stones or trunks of the trees – you have no idea how well the fish hear all these sounds under water!

Moving along the bottom, you should look from side to side and over yourself. Move quietly and steadily – this will save your energy.

Control over the start of ascending plays very important role. Ascent should be carried out at the time of first contractions, but experienced divers can start their ascent later, it depends on state of diver`s health.

Ascending starts very smoothly: “Dolphin” technique will save your energy. Moving at depth should be slower than moving closer to the surface — this way you protect yourself from black-out.
